The MELLFIN Family Engagement Award is an annual award for a program whose exemplary efforts to engage English learner (EL) families has made a significant impact in the lives of EL youth and families in Maryland. MELLFIN created the award to highlight model programs that demonstrate promising practices for EL family engagement and to encourage other groups to implement similar initiatives. Eligible programs are hosted by staff from school systems, community organizations, and/or businesses within the state of Maryland.

This year, MELLFIN is proud to honor, Dr. John Nelson, one of the founding members of the MELLFIN organization, whose life was dedicated to serving EL students and families across the State. Dr. Nelson passed earlier this year, and will be remembered as a champion and advocate for equity in engagement— his work in the field has been significant and lasting. To honor his legacy, MELLFIN has named the annual award the “John Nelson Family Engagement Award.” Dr. Nelson’s wife and daughter will present the award at the MELLFIN Conference.

Celebrating Our 10th Conference Year
MELLFIN Officers and Planning Committee are deeply grateful for the turnout at the 10th Annual Conference. This would not have been possible without the support of our growing membership network. It is our goal that everyone enjoyed the sessions and were helpful in the daily efforts of supporting ELL families across Maryland. Check the conference video here! Presentation will be posted soon.
